In just a few years on the Toronto jazz scene, Jeff King has risen to become one of Canada's truly formidable young talents.
He started playing woodwinds at the age of 10, starting with clarinet and moving on to saxophone and flute in high school. Jeff’s abilities were apparent early, and after high school he was accepted to study classical music at the U.W.O.
While refining his classical technique, Jeff began to seriously study jazz music. He began playing and recording jazz with local artists while still in university. One such musician was the great clarinetist and jazz educator Phil Nimmons, who recommended Jeff move to Toronto to study further—and after graduating with a 4 year honors degree, Jeff did just that.
In Toronto, Jeff did post graduate studies in jazz under the tutelage of the great jazz saxophonist Kirk MacDonald. Over the years of study, Kirk became Jeff’s mentor and friend, and taught Jeff about both the playing and the composing of jazz music.
Since then, Jeff has been active in the Canadian jazz scene; having played or recorded with such great musicians as Terry Clarke, Kieran Overs, Nancy Walker, Steve Wallace, Hilario Duran, Brian Dickenson, Neil Swainson, David Braid, Bob McLaren, Roy Patterson, Lorne Lofsky, Kevin Turcotte, Reg Schwager, John MacLeod and many more.
Jeff’s new recording – Urban & Eastern - marks his second as a leader. This has allowed Jeff to play his own music his own way, with people he wants to play with. The result speaks for itself, and demands far more than just one casual listen.
For the future, Jeff has set his sights on doing even more writing and recording. If Urban & Eastern is any indication of what is to come, Jeff’s future looks bright indeed!
